Who We Are

This is the story of self-sufficiency and innovation.

It begins with a beautiful merge and co-op of two different cultures. In the early 19th century African and Indigenous peoples escaped slavery to the Jalapão region of Brazil forming Quilombo communities. They shared a common goal of independence in all forms including economic.

The region’s unique climate is home to the a rare crop called Syngonanthus Nitens. It took the artistic eye and vision of Dona Miúda in the early 20th century to recognize the decorative potential of this crop which has since been called “Golden Grass.” Armed with the artisan skills shared by the Xerente Indigenous peoples, the Afro - Brazilian woman transformed these humble, yet radiant crops, into beautiful, high demanding crafts in the forms of fashion accessories and home decor.

Today this artisanship allows for a significant source of income to be provided, a tradition upheld and pride cultivated.

Hi there! I’m Monique, the founder and designer at Raízes.

My Brazilian roots deeply influence my work, weaving a connection between heritage and contemporary design. I like to think of golden grass jewelry as not just a fashion statement, but as a symbol of empowerment and self-expression.

I truly hope you enjoy wearing Raízes as much as we enjoy crafting it.

Words from the founder.
